The Biblical “Widow’s Mite”
The term “Widow’s Mite” is traditionally associated with the account of the widow's offering recorded in the Gospels of Mark and Luke.
In the Biblical account, Jesus observes a poor widow contributing two extremely small-value coins to the Temple treasury. Although her monetary contribution was small, he explains that she had given more proportionally than wealthy contributors because she gave from what little she possessed.
The English word “mite” was not an ancient Judaean denomination. It became a traditional term for the small bronze coins associated with the Biblical story.
NGC Ancients specifically identifies this coin on its certification label as a Biblical “Widow’s Mite.”
A Coin From Ancient Judaea
The Maccabean or Hasmonean dynasty ruled Judaea during a pivotal period of Jewish history before the region came under increasing Roman influence.
These small bronze prutot were everyday currency rather than ceremonial or commemorative objects. Coins of this type would have circulated through markets and communities throughout ancient Judaea.
The obverse/reverse design is identified by NGC as cornucopias and inscription, imagery characteristic of Hasmonean bronze coinage.
Unlike a modern reproduction or Biblical-themed collectible, this is an actual ancient coin struck more than two millennia ago.
Condition & Certification
NGC Ancients has authenticated and encapsulated the coin and assigned it a grade of Choice Fine (Ch F).
Ancient coins were individually struck by hand, so irregular shape, imperfect centering, surface variation, wear and differences in strike are normal characteristics of genuine ancient coinage.
